摘要

This paper examines the evolution and current status of tourism planning in China. Tourism planning has evolved in a dynamic context which has involved rapid growth in tourism and the evolution of China from a centrally planned towards a market-oriented economy. It is argued that Chinese tourism planning has been highly market driven, lacking in community participation, has experienced a shortage of human resources, faces political barriers, is characterized by limited collaboration and information sharing, has deficiencies in legislation and regulation, and lacks effective monitoring, evaluation and supervision. These issues need to be addressed if China is to plan effectively for the growing numbers of both international and domestic tourists that are projected.
