摘要

Several decades ago backpackers were regarded by the tourism establishment as cheap, probably dirty and most likely beer swilling, drug taking, cheap-skate travellers who added little to destinations. Over the past decade however this group has emerged as a significant tourist market, and have begun to attract serious investment both in specialist facilities and in marketing dollars at destinations. To identify the implications of this change a convenience survey of 312 backpackers was conducted in Cairns over the summer of 2004-2005. The findings indicate a significant shift in the image young travellers have of themselves. If young travellers do not see themselves as backpackers are marketing messages being misdirected? If the term backpacker is outdated what term should replace it? Is this a generational issue or are the activities desired by this group similar to those of the past? These issues and their relevance to backpacking research are addressed in this paper.
