We present a summary for development of finite element methods based on a full mixed formulation in which displacements, strains and stresses are approximated. Specifically, we construct the general mixed statement for geometrically linear problems and examine the implications of two mixed element classes, namely the enhanced assumed strain and the mixed-enhanced formulations. The consequences of each formulation with respect to the general mixed problem are discussed and compared. Some alternatives for constructing the strain and stress interpolations are presented. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the mixed-enhanced methods presented.
