A number of geoengineering problems, involving unsaturated soils, require an understanding of the hydraulic relations between degree of saturation and matric suction head. For example, knowledge of hydraulic relations is required for solution of coupled flow and stress-strain behavior of unsaturated soils. Similarly, in modeling the flow of contaminants in unsaturated soils information about hydraulic relations is essential. In this paper, major features of hydraulic relations under dynamic flow condition are highlighted and discussed using experimental results from tests involving static equilibrium and dynamic flow of water. The experimental apparatuses used included Buchner funnel and fully instrumented 2-D tank. Several scanning loops were simulated to investigate the nature of hydraulic relations.
