Reference evapotranspiration (ET_0) is a basic parameter of hydrologic studies. Knowledge of the exact amount of water required by different crops in a given set of climatic conditions of region specific will be of great help for planning irrigation schemes, irrigation scheduling and mid term planning in case of mid season drought. Since, no systematic information was available about evapotranspiration in the region, present study was taken for Doimukh, Arunachal Pradesh (India) with the main objective of estimating ET_0 under the humid climatic conditions using Penman FAO-24, Penman Monteith FAO-56 and Christiansen models. A study has also been undertaken to develop interrelationships among these frequently used ET_0 models by using linear regression analyses. Such interrelationships could be used as an additional tool to convert estimate by one model to another model. About ten years of average weekly meteorological data of Doimukh have been used to estimate ET_0 and to develop interrelationships. The average weekly ET_0 values obtained by the Penman FAO-24 and Christiansen models are 2.24 and 2.13 mm per day respectively which are very close to the average weekly ET_0 value (1.90 mm per day) obtained from the Penman Monteith FAO-56 model. Thus, the results of this study suggest that the Penman FAO-24 and Christiansen models compared well with the Penman Monteith FAO 56 model. The standard error and the coefficient of correlation of all these models varied between 0.09 to 0.16 mm per day and 0.98 to 0.92 respectively.
