Water bodies, natural or man-made are important for all living things and also to maintain a balanced eco-system. Quantification of soil erosion from catchment area and silt deposition in the water-body is most important to assess the useful life of any water-body. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) model in GIS platform has been used to estimate annual soil erosion from the catchment area of Sagar lake in Madhya Pradesh (India). ILWIS 2.2 GIS has been used as a platform for spatial and non-spatial data analysis required in the USLE. The actual soil loss from the catchment area of Sagar lake has been estimated to be 17840 t/year and also the average rate of silt deposition in the lake has been calculated as 1.15 cm/year.
