Among various climatic parameters rainfall is of greatest concern to the population of India. The inter-annual variability of the yearly and monsoon rainfall has considerable impact on national activities like agriculture, water management and hydropower generation. In the present paper the annual rainfall data of Midnapur district of West Bengal, India for the period of twenty-one years (1980 to 2001) have been statistically analyzed to arrive at an inference from the point of quantile estimation of rainfall for different return periods by fitting frequency distribution function. Fitting of frequency distribution function involves the test of independence of the data, as it is a basic assumption for frequency distribution, which was carried out by using Wald-Wolfowitz test and Anderson's correlogram test. The true hypothesis of these tests clearly indicates that the series is independent at 5 % significance level. The statistical parameters such as coefficient of variation (Cv) and coefficient of skewness (Cs) were determined for original annual rainfall series as well as log-transformed series to check the preliminary fitting of appropriate distribution function. The Cv and Cs of both the series, original as well as log-transformed series were found to be 0.2906 and 0.6403; and 0.0283 and 0.1086 respectively, which gave an indication of fitting of Log-Normal distribution function for the annual rainfall series of Midnapur raingauge station. The parameters of Normal and Lognormal frequency distribution functions were estimated by using the method of moments (MoM). The Kolmogorov-Smimov (K-S) test was applied to check the goodness of fit of distribution function at 5 % significance level. The tests reveal that the lognormal distribution was fitted best to the annual rainfall series of Midnapur raingauge station of West Bengal and was used in computation of quantile estimates.
