Frequency analysis of hydrologic events is very much essential in the solution of a variety of water-resource problems such as design of hydraulic structures, flood plain zoning, economic evaluation of flood protection projects, etc. In this paper the frequency analysis of annual rainfall is performed by the more commonly used plotting-position formulae such as California method, Hazen's method, Weibul method, Tukey method, Chegodayev method and Blom method. Observed annual rainfall data for the period of 65 years from 1935 to 2000 years at certain rain-gauge stations located in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu state are taken for the study. The return period of each observed annual rainfall magnitude at each of the rain-gauge stations taken for study is determined by each of the plotting-position formulae considered in the study. Logarithmic equations of the form P = a + b. ln (T_r) are fitted respectively to the observed annual rainfall magnitudes with return periods T_r for each station and for each of the plotting position formulae. The extrapolated values as estimated by different formulae are compared with the actual rainfall magnitudes. Plotting-position methods that give reliable estimates of rainfall for higher return periods are recommended.
