This paper relates the peak discharge with storm rainfall and watershed characteristics using the concepts of the Soil Conservation Service Curve Number (SCS-CN) methodology (SCS, 1956) and the peak-discharge rating curve, employs the developed relationship to the data of three watersheds of U.S.A., and compares the model performance with that of the polynomial fits. The performance (efficiency in the range of 86.61-92.14%) of the SCS-CN-based relations is found to be fairly close to that of the polynomial fits (efficiencies in the range of 89.70-98.64%. The parameters of the former however bear some physical significance and those of the latter are not at all describable physically. The analysis also reveals that initial abstractions do not affect the peak discharge of a rainfall-runoff event.
