Parkeston Pumping Station is located at the downstream end of Ramsey River. The river is land locked by Harwich to London railway line embankment and Parkeston Quay Development (Harwich International Port) and relies totally on the pumping station for its drainage. The new pumping station replaces two horizontally mounted axial flow pumps housed in floating pontoons with a total capacity of 2.8 mVs. The pumps, installed in 1961, were difficult to maintain due to the need for working in an enclosed space and were beyond economic repair. The new pumping station consists of three submersible canister pumps with a total capacity of 3 mVs suspended on a bridge structure across the river. The new design ensured ease of maintenance and low capital cost whilst maintaining pumping throughout the construction period with minimum need for temporary pumping.
