To develop detailed information related to hydraulic residence time and travel path, which are required for understanding water quality issues, typical data collection approaches are inadequate. This study presents a network-wide field-scale tracer study, coupled with water quality monitoring, to collect a rich data set for evaluating hydraulic and water quality issues. Using hydraulic data collected from the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) equipment and water quality data collected from continuous monitors at the treatment plant, inputs to an existing distribution system model are adjusted to represent the conditions observed during the study time frame. The model predicted values are compared to the observed data and provide utility personnel with a qualitative level of confidence in the model. The observed data illustrate the use of tracer data for providing confidence with respect to the predictive ability of the network model, and provide an opportunity for determining the additional information that would be needed to improve model accuracy.
