Spartina pectinata, prairle cordgrass, is one of several inland fresh water cordgrasses and is native and widespread in North America. This aquatic macrophyte species, which has the characteristics of a potentially useful species for growth in constructed treatment wetlands, was examined in a titanium (III) citrate buffer to measure oxygen release for the root systems in an anaerobic substrate. In addition, pilot wetlands were investigated under greenhouse conditions to determine the nitrogen removal performance of S. pectinata. Typha latifolia, common cattail, was used as a reference species. The higher amount of oxygen release under the experimental conditions by cordgrass on a per unit area basis, approximately 0.6 g/m~2/day, as compared to cattail, approximately 0.04 g/m~2/day demonstrated that this species has the ability to aerate the anaerobic substrate. Also, the higher nitrogen removal rate of the wetland planted with cordgrass, 9.16 g/m~2/day, as compared to that planted with cattail, 4.39 g/m~2/day, suggests that prairie cordgrass has excellent potential for use in constructed treatment wetlands.
