摘要

In 1998, we evaluated the impact of suburban development on groundwater elevations and salinity in the Alkali Sink wetland. We evaluated the current and historical data using a MODFLOW groundwater flow model and salinity mass balance calculations. Our evaluation indicates that the deepening of Altamont Creek intercepted additional groundwater flow which significantly impacted groundwater elevations and salinity int he Alkali Sink. Our results indicate that the Alkali Sink experienced up to a 55percent decline in annual groundwater flow and a 60percent decrease in annual salt loading due to the deepened Altamont Creek. These calculations support observations that the salinity concentrations in the Alkali Sink are declining over time. Our evaluation of a proposed suburban development was limited to the impact of altered groundwater drainage and recharge. Our results indicate the proposed development would produce a further 10percent decrease in both ground water flow and annual salt loading to the wetland area.
