Partitioning of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), lower chlorinated benzenes and hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) betweent he plant-air interface was measured inf ield and laboratory studies. Bark, leaf, and leaf litter of Baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) and Black Willow (Salix nigra) tress were collected from the Petro Processors Inc. (PPI) Superfund site and were analyzed for the concentrations of HCB, HCBD, and their breakdown products. It was determined that significant quantities of chlorobenzenes are present in the various plant tissues analyzed, with bark having the highest concentrations. Spatial relationships for the concentrations of the chlorobenzenes were developed for the two experimental locations, and two species of interest. In addition, two controlled environment chamber experiments were conducted to determine fundamental partitioning coefficients for target compounds on Black Willow leaves. A first order kinetic model was applied to the experimental results to determine a plant-air equilibrium partition coefficient (K_(PA)) for HCB. The experimentally determined K_(PA) was found to be in agreemnet with values published for other plant species, and was subsequently used to estimate the expected air concentrations of HCB at the PPI site.
