A new design of treatment wetland for acidic mine drainage, refered to as the anaerobic horizontal flow (AHF) system, has been tested in the laboratory. The AHF system features a gravel layer for fluid flow beneath a thick layer of organic matter, which provides a suitable environment for sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). Over the course of one month a significant reduction in the concentrations of sulfate ion and ferrous ion in simulated mine drainage was observed with beds that employed horse manure. Over longer periods of time the activity of the SRB was found to be limited by the rate of production of lactic acid resulting from fermentation in the bed.
