This paper presents the current state of the science for treatment wetland design for chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The treatment "concept" is that chlorinated VOCs would be reductively dechlorinated to lower chlorinated daughter products or biodegraded via methanotrophic processes to CO_2 as the compounds pass through the highly organic sediment of the wetland. Three groups of design parameters are discussed: a). microbial fate processes, b). plant uptake and metabolism and c). sorption. A design equation and approach is proposed and sample calculations are presented. The design approach predicts that bed depths of <10 m are sufficient to remove mg/L concentrations of VOCs in these systems. These depths are similar to those observed in field sites where these processes are occurring.
