DSR-based Energy-aware Routing Protocols in Ad Hoc networks

An ad hoc network is composed of a group of mobile, wireless nodes which cooperate to forward packets in a multi-hop fashion without any centralized administration. Efficient energy conservation plays an important role in the performance of wireless ad hoc networks because mobile hosts in such networks are usually battery-operated. While many studies have focused on minimizing energy consumption per packet or flow, even a single-point failure caused by energy exhaustion can result in significant performance degradation. We present two energy-aware routing protocols, Request-delay and Max-min routing protocols (RDRP and MMRP) based on DSR, aimed at maximizing the life-span of a network without any central information about the topology or traffic demands. With simple modifications of DSR, our methods gain efficient energy load balance at the expense of routing discovery delay. We show their effectiveness by various performance metrics when compared with DSR.
