Among the different evolutive deterioration processes for dam materials, recently in Italy Alkali Aggregate Reaction (AAR) phenomena are becoming more and more important. A particularly meaningful case is represented by Poglia dam. This structure, which owner is Edison S.p.A., is a hollow gravity Marcello type dam (located in Lombardia region), which aim is the hydroelectric power generation. Since seventies some measurements have shown a slow drift in elevation and, secondarily, in downstream-upstream direction and for this reason the owner has started some investigations in order to reach a clear explanation of the causes. After a careful examination of the reliability of the measurements (levelling, colli-mation, pendulums, extensometers, etc.) and having excluded the existence of problems related to the stability of foundation and abutments, the possible presence of expansive phenomena has been explored. To this aim a deep in situ and laboratory campaign has been carried out and the presence of the AAR phenomena has been detected. The phenomena have a moderate entity but, due to the non-rectilinear shape of the longitudinal dam axis and to the peculiar geometry of the dam blocks, a stress-strain state has taken place in the dam body which deserves attention particularly in the zones closer to the variation of direction of the dam axis. Thanks to the availability of a particularly advanced finite element computer program (CANT-SD: three-dimensional, non linear, capable to simulate the expansion AAR phenomena) calibrated on the basis of the measurements recorded on the dam, different evolutive scenarios have been analysed and different hypothetical structural interventions have been examined. The final decision envisaged is to cut the contraction joints in order to reduce the compression stresses in the blocks and in the right gravity shoulder.
