The aerobic capacity of an individual is an index of his or her performance capacity. Measurement of aerobic capacity in a industrial set-up is the key point for Safety, Health & higher Productivity of industrial worker. Indian Dock operations are still predominantly manual inspite of few mechanization. A few loading and unloading operations have been studied in two different docks of the country where operations were done in manual as well as mechanical. The unloading of 50 kg. and 93 kg load respectively carried in both head and back. Various physiological measurements like Working heart rate, Peak heart rate in beats per minute, Pulmonary ventilation in liters per minute, oxygen consumption in litters per minute, energy expenditure in Kcal per minute, Oral Temperature in ℃ have been recorded for 38 back loaders and 35 head loaders respectively. The study schedule have been carried out from 6.00 a.m. to 14.00 hrs. with usual lunch and tea breaks. The study reveals the increase of energy expenditure from 1st Spell to 3rd spell of work usually as the shift timing is progressing concluding the accumulation of physiological fatigue among the workers. The assessment of job severity comes 'high' to 'very high' which the workers will be unable to sustain for 8.00 hrs. work schedule. The energy cost of back loader is 12.90 Kcal per minute, whereas the head loader consumes 8.89 Kcal per minute. Considerable differences have been observed in both the groups of loaders and it was found to be beyond safe limit of industrial operation. The subjective symptoms of fatigue and various musculo-skeletal disorders have also been observed and it was found to be one of the major cause in development of back pain and various other musculo-skeletal disorders. Scoliosis, lumbago and various other deformities are prevalent among both the groups of loaders. An ergonomic redesigning of such operation is absolutely essential for combating high levels of fatigue and unsafe industrial operations. A long term detailed ergonomical assessment and modifications are under way for dock unloading operations in Indian Docks.
