Respiratory Function Assessment in Workers Exposed to Storage Grain Dust

Workers handling the storage food grains are exposed to grain dust, which is a complex mixture of various chemical agents and biological species like pesticides, fungi, silica, bacteria, spores, storage mites, animal hairs, pollens, etc. The study was carried out in a Food Corporation of India (FCI) depot. The process of storage involves lifting, shifting and arranging of grain bags in addition cleaning, sweeping, winnowing, bag filling and fumigation. The workers were categorically divided into Load handling, Ancillary, Quality Control and Depot Administration. As a whole 136 workers in summer and 195 workers in winter season in the same depot were under gone Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) to assess the respiratory functional status,. Spirovit-SP-10 (Schiller Ltd, Switzerland) and Wright Peak Flow Meter (U.K.) recorded Vital Capacity (VC), Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), and Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR). Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV_1), FEV_1% and different flow rates were calculated. Post-shift PFT were done in 69 workers of which 47.8% showed the decrement. The bronchodilator aerosol (Salbutamol) was administered in showed positive bronchodilatation in 27.3% of workers. The age, height and weight of the workers of both studies were highly comparable. The PFT results of the loading workers were found higher than the other categories. A gradual reduction of PFT values were found as age was increased but not with duration of exposure. The PFT values in summer were higher than the winter. Restrictive, obstructive and combined types of respiratory impairments were noticed. The concentration of airborne fungal spores was measured and the species Aspergilla, Alternaria, Curvularia, Drechslera, Epicocum, Nigrospora, Periconia were very much common and found higher in winter compared to in summer season.
