A uniform distribution of blast is an important prerequisite for a balanced blast furnace operation, since the blast, after its combustion reactions with coke and injected reducing agents in the raceways, forms the hot gases that are needed for heating, reduction and melting of the iron ores. The supply of hot gas from individual tuyeres depends of the supply of blast, which reflects the flow resistances encountered in the tuyeres and behind the raceways. Not only the mass flow rates but also the gas velocities at the tuyere tips are important; a too low flow rate yields an unstable raceway and prevents the gases from entering the central part of the furnace, while a too high velocity degrades the coke and create fines that block the raceway boundaries and the dead man. A model evaluating the effect of changes in tuyere parameters and boundary conditions has been developed. The influence of changes in, e.g., the total blast volume, blast pressure, tuyere diameter, and the combustion degree of injected reductants in the tuyeres on the individual tuyere/raceway conditions has been studied by the model. An on-line version of the model has been applied to follow the evolution of the conditions in operating blast furnaces.
