Since several years P-red has been recognised to be an effective FR agent for organic polymers and in the last decade it has become the product of choice in term of cost/effectiveness for flame proofing PA 66 GF articles. Its application have been limited mainly for the inherent colour and safety issues related to the product handling for P-red in powder form (flammability). The masterbatches, which contain highly stabilised and micro-encapsulated P-red, nowadays available at Italmatch Chemicals in a wide range of polymer carriers, solved almost all problems linked with the handling and the industrial safety so that P-red has become the product of election for glass fibre reinforced Nylons ranking VO at 0,8 mm in thickness without affecting mechanical and electrical properties of final article. With the present industrial technologies, new P-red grades are available and the improved FR properties make the product even more competitive, from the cost/ performance point of view, to brominated and halogen free additives in many applications. For example the new P-red grades allow polyolefins to rank V2, or pass the FMVSS 302 test for transportation with a minimum loading level with great benefit on the mechanical properties of final article. In this applications P-red seems to work both in the condensed phase as a heat sinking agent by promoting the dripping and also in the gas phase through a radical process. When used together with other selected flame retardants it shows a good synergy which provide the possibility to pass the UL 94 VO and the DIN 4102 B1 tests. Comparison performances of P-red grades in some polymers will be presented and discussed.
