Triple Channel Infrared (IR3) flame detectors are often promoted on the basis of their very high sensitivity to fire. This feature has resulted in many installations suffering from unwanted alarms and shut-downs as a result of direct or reflected radiation from a process relief flare. Subsequent ad-hoc remedial action often results in diminished system sensitivity and coverage far below the design intent. This paper will cover the available technologies available in flame detection, the problems associated with the different technologies and the evolving technology of visual imaging based detection.
