摘要

Kenaf is now widely recognized as a potential plant to fight against the environmental problems in Japan. The status of research and development of various Japanese kenaf activities is discussed. The first kenaf research made by Japanese was in Northeast China during 1929-1935, and the kenaf plantation area reached 30,000 ha. in 1936. After the World War Ⅱ, kenaf has been selected as a plant raw material for papermaking in China in 1990 by a Japanese committee looking for a solution to the global warming under the support of Japanese Environment Agency. So far, kenaf mill of large capacity in China has not been realized yet, but the potential exists. Kenaf is planted at small scale in many places across Japan, especially in educational institutions including elementary schools. Kenaf has been newly recognized as a potential plant fighting against many environmental and educational problems. Kenaf paper products are available in the market, but most of them are made from the imported kenaf pulp. Handmade kenaf paper products have been made for educational purpose in many Japanese schools. Several companies and universities have conducted research and developed kenaf products in cooperation with other Asian countries like China, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Examples of the products are automobile door panels, bast fiber board for house construction, and wallpaper. Other usages are still under developing, like kenaf seed oil paint, mushroom medium, and kenaf charcoal. Bioremediation of soil contaminated by heavy metals and use of kenaf for wastewater treatment are being investigated in some institutions in Japan. Kenaf as animal feed is also being investigated.
