摘要

This paper examines the variations in the fineness of degummed hemp fibers. An Optical Fiber Diameter Analyzer (OFDA) has been used to measure the distribution of fiber width. The variations in fiber width are then co-related with the presence of fiber bundles in 28 fiber samples. The results show that there is a significant linear co-relation between the co-efficient of variation of fiber width and the proportion of coarse fiber bundles. These coarse fiber bundles arise from the imhomogeneous and incomplete separation of hemp fibers during chemical degumming and mechanical processing. They lead to increased average fiber width and width variation. A weak but positive co-relation also exists between the co-efficient of variation of fiber width and the average fiber width for the degummed hemp fiber samples used in this study.
