Natural Kenaf Fiber Modified by Graft Polymerization and Its Composites

The graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto natural kenaf fibers initiated by cerium salt has been studied in a solution system using a pretreatment technique. To determine the optimum conditions for grafting, the effects of the variables such as pretreatment time, grafting time, polymerization temperature, eerie ion concentration, and monomer concentration were investigated. Grafting has also been carried out in the presence of additional organic solvent. The characterization of grafted-kenaf was conducted using FT-IR, SEM and TG/DTA. It was observed that the pretreatment of kenaf fibers with cerium salt solution in air is indispensable for the graft polymerization. It revealed that peroxides were formed during the pretreatment to initiate the graft polymerization. Graft yield was found to be optimum after 3 hours, yielding a value of up to 145%. Thermogravimetric analyses revealed that the grafted kenaf was more stable than original kenaf and PMMA. In order to examine the applicability of the grafted kenaf to the reinforcement of composite material, the grafted kenaf fiber was molded with PMMA powder into composite plates. The composite plate using untreated kenaf fiber was also prepared for comparison. Both of the composites were prepared by means of hot pressing. The grafted-kenaf composite showed improvements of failure strength, initial modulus and waterproof with the impartment of 47%, 33% and 72%, respectively.
