Micro-environmental Factors for Ground Cover Bryophytes

Bryophytes (mosses) are one of the most important ground cover plants in Japanese gardens. Although large numbers of studies have been made on some popular kinds of ground cover bryophytes, little is known about other ground cover bryophytes in gardens. The purpose of this paper is to reveal bryophyte species used as ground cover, and the relationships between distribution of ground cover bryophytes and micro-environmental factors in gardens. One garden in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, was selected as a study site. In this study site, a total of 17 species of bryophytes were found, and six species were major ground cover bryophytes. Among these bryophytes, Atricum undulatum, Polytrichum commune, Trachycystis microphylla and Pseudotaxiphyllum pohliaecarpum were suitable for ground cover because of their dense cover and aesthetic reasons. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to show correlations between bryophytes species and micro-environmental factors. The first ordination axis was strongly negatively correlated with the soil hardness. The second ordination axis was strongly positively correlated with the amount of solar radiation. The eigenvalues for the first and second axes were 0.799 and 0.674. The total species variation that was explained by this model was significant, with 11.6% explained by the first axis, 21.1% explained by the second axis, and 26.1%. Although the species-environment correlations in the CCA were highly significant along the first axis and along the second axis, the environmental variables measured explained but a small part of their variation in species data, suggesting that other, more determining factors exist. Nevertheless some remarkable patterns can be recognized. Our results further provide information on the using ground cover bryophytes in urban areas. There is room for further investigation of the relationships between distribution of ground cover bryophytes and micro-environmental factors.
