Pararosaniline (PRA) is an important dye used in biological andrnchemistry assay, being suspected to be carcinogenic. Thus, itsrnenvironmental and occupational issues are very important. The aim ofrnthis study was to investigate the chemical oxidation of pararosanilinerndye by ozonation and sonolytic process. Experimental results indicaternthat ozonation of pararosaniline solution is more efficient thanrnultrasonic irradiation alone. Ultrasound did not increase the degrationrnrate but the intermediates and, probably the final yield, are differentrnthan in ozonation system. The results obtained indicate that ozonationrnis the most powerful tool in the treatment of the PRA wastes evenrncompared to others advanced oxidation processes (OPA) asrnphotocatalytic and peroxide dye degradation. The kinetics of PRArndegradation by different techniques is also discussed. Such anrnunderstanding is necessary for the design and application of PRArntreatment process.
