Eight volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) that are on the EPArnContaminant Candidate List were screened for their relative reactivityrnwith ozone using batch reactors. Rates of degradation were in the orderrnof: 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene > p-cymene > bromobenzene > 1,1-rndichloropropane > 1,3-dichloropropane > 1,1-dichloroethane > 2,2-rndichloropropane > 1,1,2,2,-tetrachloroethane. Decay rates of aromaticrnVOCs were shown to be related to the electron donating orrnwithdrawing ability of the substituent groups on the aromatic ring. Thernreactivity of the aliphatic VOCs were associated with the number ofrnavailable H atom for abstraction and the stability of the carbon centeredrnradical intermediates during the H-atom abstraction reactions with OHrnradicals. The second-order rate constants, k and kOH, were alsornobtained for the VOCs.
