In South-Western Finland the mire development, starting from initial sedge fens about 900 years ago, eventually resulted in formation of ombrotrophic plateau bogs. Two millennia after the paludification started the climatic conditions changed, causing a take-over of ombrotrophic vegetation. Landscape-atmospheric interaction in peatlands can be viewed through the history of carbon gas fluxes. As peatland ecohydrology is highly dependent on climatic inferences like distribution of precipitation, especially on summer droughts, variations in such weather patterns may cause large interannual changes in CH_4 emissions or the rate of C sequestration. This paper presents by means of sensitivity analysis, how rapid climatic changes during the late Holocene may have changed the annual gas exchange patterns in raised bog Kontolanrahka, and the atmospheric interaction of southern boreal peatlands in general.
