Horticulture is the most effective means of plant production. Conditions in greenhouses are optimized by means of advanced control techniques, to achieve the growth result most desired. When the appropriate technique is used, it is possible to produce greenhouse crops all year round, even in Nordic conditions. Economic input and output factors are carefully considered in the optimization of the production environment Yield efficiency is one of the key factors for the grower and is important to bear in mind when the growing medium is considered. The suitability of the growing media for the growth technique is of great importance. Economic factors and availability play a major role in acquisition of the substrate. The environmental impact of the substrate and production as a whole plays a more and more important role. Peat is known to be one of the most ideal materials for horticultural growing media. Its physical, chemical, and biological characteristics create a good environment for plant roots. The amount of peat used as a growing medium for greenhouse vegetable production is, however, insignificant in comparison to that of inorganic materials in many countries. In Finland, many kind of peat-based growing media have been developed for greenhouse vegetables. Use of well-chosen raw materials, new production techniques combined with computer-aided irrigation, and fertilization management are the key factors in successful production. In this work, an example of an effective year-round cucumber and tomato production method is described. Yield targets of more than 60 kg m~(-2) for tomatoes and more than 100 kg m~(-2) for cucumbers can be reached in a year.
