The coppicing ability of trees may weaken over time and the nutrients available to trees diminish, when whole trees are harvested. We do not know if and how these losses can be replaced by fertilizing. This work aims to study the growth of sprout-originated dense stands, the quantity of nutrients lost in whole tree harvesting, and the effect of recycled nutrients on the development of coppiced birch stands. The experiment was established in 2003 on a peatland covered by a dense birch stand. The trees were measured, and samples of leaves and peat were taken for nutrient analysis prior to clear-cutting. Four different mixtures of recycled nutrients, ashes, and biotite were replicated in four clear-cut blocks. The development of coppiced stands will be studied using measurements of trees, and nutrient analysis during the estimated 30 years' rotation.
