The carbon dioxide in boreal peat deposits is estimated at 455 Pg. The CO_2 emission induced by reclamation and drainage of peat bogs reaches 0.085 Pg/year and that of CH_4 0.046 Pg/ year. In this paper emphasis is given to regularities of changes in the contents of carbon compounds in reclaimed and cultivated peat soils and the CO_2 emission from them. The mean rate of CO_2 emission from virgin and cultivated drained plots is estimated at 81 and 120 kg ha "1 day "1, respectively. Assessing the total area of drained peat soils in Russia (6.8 million hectaters), annual CO_2 emission from these soils is estimated at 0.136 Pg.
