Gerbera was grown for 24 months in four growing media: white peat; sphagnum peat + perlite; brown peat; brown peat + calcined clay. The physical properties of the media were obtained from a 192,3 cc PVC sampling rings buried in growth cylinders at a distance of 2.5,10.0 and 17.5 cm from the bottom. Rings were removed after 1,3,6,12,18 and 24 months of cultivation. Total pore space generally decreased during the cultivation period. The lower total pore space was associated with decreased air volume or increase in water volume. Shrinkage value was generally increasing during the time of cultivation. Generally total porosity and air content at -10 cm H_2O was markedly lower in the bottom than in the upper layer of cylinder, while the opposite was observed for bulk density, shrinkage and water content at -10 cm H_2O. These differences increased in time and they were most apparent in brown peat and least apparent in sphagnum peat + perlite.
