The aim of this study was to assess the use of MRS to measure several physical and chemical properties of peat used as growing substrates. NIR spectra were recorded for 64 samples of peat collected in the Italian market of potting media. pH, electric conductivity, total carbon and nitrogen, fibres (neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre and acid detergent lignin), easily available water (EAW), bulk density and porosity were determined and correlated with spectroscopic data by Partial Least Squares regression (PLS) in order to obtain calibration models for the investigated parameters. NIRS predicted well the content of total carbon and nitrogen, neutral detergent fibre, detergent lignine, porosity and bulk density. Calibrations for remaining parameters were less effective.
