PATTERNS OF PLANT SPECIES RESPONSES TO THE WATER TABLE DEPTH GRADIENT IN FINNISH MIRES

Bryophytes had narrower responses than vascular plants to the water table depth (WTD) gradient. Species response location and width estimates were positively correlated among bryophytes, indicating generally wider responses of species adapted to dry microhabitats. Shallow-rooted vascular plant species showed the same pattern, whereas deep-rooted species groups showed no pattern or negative correlations. The growth form and existence of root aerenchyma, mycorhiza and fine roots were connected to the response location along the WTD gradient. Unimodal and symmetric response shape was the commonest both among bryophytes (58%) and vascular plant species (52%). Continuous response were also common. Only a few species responses showed significantly skew shapes.
