Vegetation development in the Teuravuoma mire complex was interpreted from a pollen diagram constructed from a series of peat samples representing the deepest part of the mire. Three main phases of development have been identified: the birch stage (T1) corresponding to the Boreal Period of the well-known postglacial climatic sequence, the birch-pine-alder stage (T2), which includes both the Atlantic and the Subboreal Period, and finally the pine-birch-spruce stage, reflecting the cool and moist Subatlantic Period. The time intervals, the limits of which are presented here as calibrated radiocarbon dates, are 10 200-8700 cal BP (the lower boundary not indicating the commencement of the Boreal Period but the initial phase of the mire), 8700-3800 cal BP and 3800 cal BP up to the present, respectively. By means of seven ~(14)C-datings the rate of peat accumulation in Teuravuoma has been estimated as 0.27-1.23 mm per year.
