The research aim was to get the scientific base for the protection of mountain peatlands - rare natural wetland type in continental Asia - at the territory of Kuznetsky Alatau mountains within the Altai-Sayan region. Topographical locations, present vegetation, Holocene history of paludification and peat mires development as well as peat and water chemistry were investigated on 56 mountain peat mire massifs. There was established, that mountain peatlands are important landscape elements, which provide significant contribution to biological diversity and ecosystem stability of unique Altai-Sayan mountains and represent significant links in the natural clean water supply of the Kuzbass industrial region.
