We compared the biomass production of three management alternatives for naturally regenerated mixed birch and willow thickets on a cut-away peatland at Aitoneva, Kihnioe over a period of 37 years. Naturally regenerated dense birch stands were a) thinned, b) clear-cut and left to coppice or c) left to grow as dense stands at the age of 16 years. Development of the stands was monitored for a period of further 21 years. The above-ground leafless dry-mass of the 37-years-old fertilized thinned stands (160-164 Mg ha~(-1)) was slightly higher than the above-ground biomass of two (16+21 years-old) energy wood rotations (145-155 Mg ha~(-1) ). The highest biomass yield was achieved with a rotation of 37 years in an un-thinned stand (211 Mg ha~(-1)). This study shows that the length of the rotation for birch in energy wood production should be considerably longer than 21 years. Furthermore, thinning of dense birch stands is an attractive option even when considering biomass production.
