Soil productivity is an essential factor in producing good sugar beet yields in terms of both quality and quantity. It also affects environmental impacts - the better productivity the less emission. Soil productivity is composed of many physical, chemical and biological factors. For high productivity, all the factors should be optimal and function together. Sugar beet is an intensive crop, which requires special care to keep the soil functioning. In Finland, however, for historical and practical reasons sugar beet cultivation is frequently accomplished by monoculture on the same fields year after year. As a result of this the physical status of clay soils has deteriorated and the yields keep declining on these fields. To solve the problem, inorganic and organic soil conditioners have been studied for many years at the Sugar Beet Research Center in the cultivation of problematic soil types. In 2002 and 2003 a trial series was conducted on biofuel ash from Salo Sugar/Power Plant and soil conditioning peat. These materials were used as soil conditioners both individually and mixed together. The trial results were very promising as far as yield quantity and quality are concerned. By this method it is possible to achieve significant improvement of sugar beet soil by suitable utilization of a byproduct of energy production and the logistics of beet and peat deliveries.
