摘要

A major nature conservation issue has arisen about the current and prospected fuel peat mining activity in the western part of the province of Oulu, North Ostrobothnia, Finland. Fuel peat energy utilization has been strongly developed in the local municipalities, including the town of Oulu with a population of 120,000. At present, more than 20,000 hectares of peatlands are being excavated at an annual take of 7.5 million m~3 of peat, and the mining area reservations extend to a further 30,000 ha. While peat excavation mainly targets the deepest central parts of peatland complexes, the mining will in fact affect a much larger area of peatland ecosystems.
