The study relates to the three ombrotrophic peat bogs in Finland: Harjavalta (vicinity of a Cu-Ni smelter), Outokumpu (near a closed Cu-Ni mine) and Hietajaervi (a background). At each sampling site one peat core (15x15x100cm) was taken. Age-dating of peat was done by ~(210)Pb dating method. The local annual temperature sum and precipitation were modeled. Objective was to study relationship between weather and accumulation rate of organic matter (OM). Based on ~(210)Pb age-dating the upper 16cm at Harjavalta, 35cm at Outokumpu and 25cm at Hietajaervi of peat represents the remains of 125 years of peat accumulation. Preliminary results indicated that the OM accumulation rate at Outokumpu was negatively correlated with the annual temperature sum, while OM accumulation correlated positively with annual precipitation sum. Both at Hietajaervi and at Harjavalta precipitation sum correlated slightly with OM accumulation rate.
