Pubescent birch is a common species on peatlands drained for forestry. A natural understorey of Norway spruce frequently develops on fertile soils, but spruce can also be planted under birches. We studied the effect of nurse crop on the height growth of both natural and planted seedlings. The nurse crop was removed, thinned or left unmanaged. The height growth of spruce understorey was measured for one period prior and two periods after the management. The results proved that the height growth of both planted and naturally regenerated spruce understoreys was greatest on the plots where the nurse crop had been removed.
