A study was conducted to investigate the effect of Cu status and medium pH on panicle emergence, seed yield and seed quality in upland rice grown on peat from Rawapening, Central Java. The experiment utilized the randomized factorial design with eight treatments and three replications. The Cu rate as the first factor consisted of Cu_0 (no Cu application), Cu_1 (1.25 ug Cu.g~(-1)), Cu_2 (5 ug Cu.g~(-1)) and Cu_3 (25 ug Cu.g~(-1)), while the peat pH as the second factor consisted of pH 5.35 (original pH) and pH 7.0 (increased by liming). The results showed that Cu status was very important in upland rice, especially in the generative phase. Panicles emerged earlier in plants on the peat medium treated with Cu as compared with no Cu application. At 70 days from planting, the number of panicles emerging increased from Cu_0 to Cu_1 and from Cu_0 to Cu_2 by 279.0% and 359.2%, respectively, whereas at 75 days from planting, increases in the number of panicles emerging were 133.3% and 166.7%, respectively. Cu application affected yield components such as filled seed weight and number of filled seed per plant. Increasing Cu rate from Cu_0 to Cu_1 resulted in increases of 127.6% and 112.7% in the two yield components, respectively. Increasing Cu rates did not significantly affect growth of subsequent seedlings germinated from seeds produced by the upland rice, but there was a tendency that seed weight affected the percentage of seed germinating, especially at 3 days after sowing. The lower the seed weight, the lesser the number of seeds germinating. Increasing pH of the peat substrate to 7.0 decreased vegetative growth parameters of the upland rice, total tiller number, total filled grains per plant and percentage of filled grains, increased percentage of empty seeds, but did not affect 100-seed weight.
