摘要

Because of the high peat nitrogen stores cutaway peatlands have a high wood production potential and thus a high carbon accumulation potential if the mineral nutrition of trees is taken care of. On the other hand, the leftover peat layer presents a potential source of CO_2 through heterotrophic respiration. However, no previously measured data from soil respiration in afforested cutaway peatlands exists in order to estimate the GHG balance. This study aims at finding out the soil respiration rates as affected by tree species (Scots pine, birch), peat thickness (from 5 to 80 cm) and afforestation age (from 15 to 40 years). According to preliminary results, they seem to have only minor effects on the soil respiration.
