Peatland in the tropical zone, especially in Indonesia, has long been used for cultivation, and even at present, agricultural expansion onto peatland continues. As population continues to grow, there is a pressing need for a substantial increase in food production to meet not only domestic needs, but also an increase in production of export commodities. One of these potential land typologies is peatland. Peatland use for agriculture entails an array of complex problems due to its peculiar characteristics. Therefore, agricultural utilization of peatland needs to guarantee its sustainability and the maintenance of its ecological functions. An improper management of peatland can result in serious disturbance to sustainable development. As peatland is a fragile resource, it is imperative that its sectoral use takes into account the aspects of sustainability. Sustainable soil management is a component of sustainable agriculture towards sustainable development. Sustainable agriculture is the use farming practices and systems which maintain or enhance (ⅰ) the economic viability of agricultural production, (ⅱ) the natural resource base, and (ⅲ) other ecosystems which are influenced by agricultural activities. Important aspect to be considered in relation to sustainable agriculture on the peatland include the choice of suitable crops, hydrological management, soil management and the management of enviromental impacts. The choice of crops needs to be based on their tolerance or adaptation to existing constraints, and on their economic values. Parameters which could be applied to measure sustainability for agriculture include productivity, stability, resiliency, equitability, autonomy, solidarity and adaptability. An in-depth study is required to establish methods or model for evaluation of agricultural sustainability on the tropical peatland for various crops. Such study should involve the selection of appropriate parameters or indicators of sustainability, and the establishment of criteria for assesing sustainability for agriculture.
