The aim of the submitted paper is to optimize of the distance of the bridge support to the centre of the railway. This safety assessment of the structure exposed to impact is based on event trees method. This method was applied taking into account the economic and social consequences of derailment. The objective is to minimize the risk to people, structures and environment. Sensitive study shows dependence of the risk on basic parameters. Submitted study is based on recommendations provided in UIC 777-2. The procedure for decision about the optimal distance of bridge column indicates that the optimal distance is 3 m for the speed of 120 km/h and distance 7 m for the speed of 160 km/h.
