The occurrence of construction defects in drilled shafts is a well-known problem in geotechnical engineering, however no means currently exist to determine the effect of a defect on shaft capacity. This research attempts to study the effect of construction defects on drilled shafts using finite element modeling and to develop a method to quantify their effect on shaft performance and behavior. Simple two-dimensional finite element models of axially loaded shafts with defects were analyzed in Phase Ⅰ of the work, and the current Phase Ⅱ research considers drilled shafts with defects under lateral and axial loading using three-dimensional models. The following presents the three-dimensional model of drilled shafts under axial loading and describes model development using the finite element code OpenSees. Model calibration using existing full-scale field load test data is discussed and preliminary results are presented.
