Although soil-material interaction has only received significant attention within the last 20 years, its importance to the performance of geotechnical engineering systems is unquestionable. Small-scale properties and behavior found at soil-material interfaces can play a large role in the global behavior of a structure. This paper summarizes the advances made in the understanding of interfaces and the factors that can significantly influence interface behavior in general. Little attention and experimental research has been devoted to the behavior of sand-clay mixtures particularly at low clay fractions. Studies highlighting this behavior are discussed to further the knowledge of how the clay fraction lubricates the interface.
