In 2002, a research project was started at the Technical University of Munich, in order to assess the fatigue behaviour of nonreinforced shear joints. Based on previous tests to evaluate the adhesion capacity, a symmetric experimental set-up was chosen, using three-part, prismatic specimens. Besides the structural behaviour under cyclic loading, the influence of the concrete strength and the surface roughness on the shearing capacity was investigated. This paper contains a short description of the experiments and measurements, presents the main results and includes a comparison with former test results. Further investigations and subsequent adjustments in building standards could lead to a more economical design of shear joints. In particular, measures to maintain and strengthen existing concrete structures could become less expensive.
